Abstract der Forschungsarbeit
Background: There has been a lot of research on whether PowerPoint assisted lectures or “chalk and talk” is the better method of delivering information to students. Some advantages and disadvantages of both methods were discovered but there are certain topics that are highly contradictory displayed in various studies, e. g. which method results in better grades or which kind of note-taking is the ost advantageous or which method is overall better. Almost all investigated research papers had something in common, though. They did not analyse attributes of the students that might influence their references in particular.
Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate factors of students that might have an impact on the method of lecture delivery they prefer.
Methodology: A questionnaire about personal attributes e.g. gender, legibility of handwriting, course of study and device used for notetaking was taken by 180 students of various courses of study attending the same statistics course. The produced data were examined for stochastic interdependencies between the queried characteristics using the ChiSquared-Test.
Results: There are significant correlations between the preferences of lecture delivery and kind of note-taking, as well as field of study.
Discussion: The correlation coefficients are very small which means that the correlations considered alone do not have a huge impact. Looking at the overall picture, personal characteristics in summa influence the preferences of lecture delivery.
Conclusion: There should be more research to examine less blurry knowledge of the interplay of factors that lead to liking or disliking a certain teaching aid.
