My internship at iwis Shanghai was not only interesting because I gained a deep insight into the processes within the company, but also challenging because not everything was easy. Therefore my time was great, certainly due to the fact that I spent it in Shanghai, a city where Chinese tradition collides with the strong will of a nation to be considered as equal to the USA or to Europe.
As I was one of two students from the TUM-Kolleg, who was kindly offered to do the internship at iwis Shanghai, I took off for an eleven hours’ flight on the 30th of June. Me and my colleague Andreas Appel were picked up every morning at around 8 a.m. from Monday till Friday by a shuttle bus from iwis that brought us directly to the company. The plant was divided into three houses standing side by side and when we arrived on our first day we realized how big the expanding efforts of iwis were although they had started in Shanghai only 4 years ago
On the first day we discussed with the general manager Mr. Chu that our time at iwis Shanghai would be divided into three different sections. During section one we spent two weeks in the external quality department. There the manager Mr. Zhuhai introduced us to iwis Shanghai and taught us how to handle costumer complaints. Besides this we learned about all the actions that have to be taken if a Nok(not ok) part was detected by the costumer. Furthermore we worked on in some respect quite demanding tasks. First we had to think about a sorting room. Mr. Zhuhai wanted us to invent an efficient system that would help iwis sort out for example rusty parts. In addition to that we had to design the room on the computer and create a work-flow chart. With its help every iwis employee should be enabled to know what to do. During the last days of the second week at the external quality department we did a lot of translation work for iwis because some statements of the work instructions were still in German.
In the third week we moved into the financial department where we created Excel sheets of sales-prediction for different products.
The third week was my favourite time at the company. Now we could work directly with the product, that means Justin, the head of the internal quality department gave us a task to inspect and arrange rusty tensioners. In addition to that we learned how the quality assurance machines worked and got an insight into the high level production, suppliers had to achieve for the motor system.

At the weekends Andi and I visited temples, museums, the French neigbourhood, the historic city of Shanghai and did two trips for one whole day both to Hangzhou and Zhujiajiao two magnificent old cities. We of course tasted all kinds of food and what is more found two good friends in this global city. Furthermore Alex Teichert and Oskar Eichler(a former Tum-Kolleg student who is now a Dj in Shanghai) helped us to get in touch with the great nightlife of Shanghai so that we are able to say: „we have experienced all different aspects of Shanghai“. On the 30th we departed from the Shanghai-airport to fly back to Germany.

I have to admit that those four weeks will stay in my mind for ever. The experiences I have made there will help me in my further live and if iwis offers this internship to two lucky students next year, I will highly recommend applying for this, because it is extremely hard to get an internship like this at the age of 17.
